Mochi is a Japanese rice cake that can be eaten as a snack or dessert. Mochi-tsuki is the traditional Japanese process of making mochi and is often a communal activity, especially during special occasions like the New Year or Year End. Steamed rice is placed in a large mortar called an usu, and teams of people use a wooden mallet called a kine to pound the rice. One person typically adds water and turns the dough to ensure an even consistency. Another person pounds the rice into a smooth, elastic dough, which can then be shaped into various forms, often into small cakes.
New Year or Year End Mochi-tsuki is the first or last event held by the Nippon club of the year. The Mochi-tsuki event invites everyone to watch and participate in the Mochitsuki creation process and enjoyment.
